FILE FOR PCO THIS WEEK! YES, YOU!!

FILE FOR PCO THIS WEEK! YES, YOU!!

Between 8AM May 6 and 5 PM May 10, you can file to be elected to a 2-year term as Democratic PCO by your neighbors in the August primary. It’s fast, free, and you can do it online.

What is a Precinct Committee Officer? Why should you consider running for the position?
It’s the backbone of local politics, voter engagement, and winning campaigns. If you’ve been looking for a way to get more involved in your neighborhood and community, or if you have some civic or political issues that you are passionate about, this will be a great starting point!
Who is Eligible?
Anyone who is a registered voter and a member of a major political party may become a candidate. A candidate must file an online Declaration of Candidacy form. Since voters do not register by political party in Washington, a candidate declares himself/herself to be a member of a political party at the time of filing.

One of the best ways for you to have an influence on voter turnout and the Democratic Party policy is to become an elected Precinct Committee Officer. In many Legislative Districts, only 1/3rd of the Democratic PCO seats are filled, which means just a few people are making powerful decisions.

If you’re the only one to file in your precinct, you won’t appear on the ballot. If someone else also files, you can work together to do voter outreach, but only one of you will be elected PCO. The PCO term starts in December.

If you’d like to get started with voter outreach and education before December, please apply to your LD Democrats to become an appointed PCO. Each organization has its own method for this, so check out their website for details.
Thank you to all who decide to serve!

FOR THE TENANT BILL OF RIGHTS

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 11AM

People’s Park

On Saturday, September 9, Tacoma For All is officially taking it back to the streets. Our most important event yet starts with a fun and empowering rally at People’s Park, then going out to meet voters, collect their stories, and remind landlords and their supporters on city council how deeply folks across Tacoma support our Tenant Bill of Rights.

The rally starts at 11:00am with inspiring speeches from T4A coalition partners and campaign leaders, along with some music, chants and story collection. We’ll then group attendees with trained canvas captains and hit the doors in Hilltop and beyond.

Tacoma For All will provide materials and support. All you have to do is show up excited and in a good pair of walking shoes if you plan on canvassing. Please register at www.bit.ly/t4arally.

Background on the mega warehouse:

The City of Tacoma permitted a 2.5 million square foot warehouse in South Tacoma for Bridge Point LLC. This mega warehouse could mean up to 12,000 vehicle trips per day through neighborhoods that already experience higher levels of pollution and serious health impacts.

Over 100 acres of greenspace above an aquifer recharge zone will be paved, potentially causing long term damage to our water supply, less tree canopy and displacement of wildlife. There is also concern that the type of jobs typically associated with large warehouses will not be union or living wage positions.

City of Tacoma gave this project a Mitigated Determination of Non-Significance, which is being appealed by 350 Tacoma and the South Tacoma Neighborhood Council. The City has also failed to conduct a Health Impact assessment.

WASHINGTON AGAINST NUCLEAR WEAPONS PICKET

WASHINGTON AGAINST NUCLEAR WEAPONS PICKET

Tuesday, September 26, 5-7PM
When: 9/26 ~5-7 pm
950 Pacific Avenue,Tacoma, WA 98402

Join folks in Tacoma for a public demonstation against nuclear weapons, and for the policies that will better the lives of everyday Americans.

People from around Washington state are coming together to say no to the $2 trillion dollar nuclear weapons enhancement plan.

As the state that is home to Hanford, the irradiated production site of the first nuclear warhead materials and Bangor-Trident, the site of more deployed nuclear weapons than anywhere else in the country, we must speak out. More importantly, we must demand that our members of Congress speak out and vote accordingly.

National Defense Authorization Act negotiations are expected to continue through September.
