The Black Lives Matter Mural Project-Tacoma celebrates the achievements and contributions of African Americans throughout history, drawing on Tacoma’s history and imagined futures.

The project is being implemented through a partnership between the City’s Office of Arts & Cultural Vitality, the Human Rights Commission, and the Tacoma Art Museum.

Artists Dionne Bonner, Kenya Adams, Gwen Jones, Charles Taylor, and Breeze are implementing the mural at Tollefsen Plaza (1548 Commerce St, Tacoma, WA 98402) this summer.

We have a variety of volunteer tasks throughout the next few weeks, and would love to have you join us to ensure the project is a success. Volunteers will help to ensure a physical presence onsite, show solidarity with the BLM movement, and answer questions from members of the public so that the artists are able to work efficiently.

Note that Tollefson Plaza is an accessible site and any roles which may require the ability to lift/carry/maneuver heavy or awkward items or to climb stairs are marked with a double asterisk**

Volunteer roles are as follows:
· Photography: Take photos of the work in action so we have consistent documentation of the project. We can’t provide a camera, but phone photos are great! Please share photos with blmmuralproject@gmail.com after your shift.
· Painting Help**: Assist the artists in helping mix paint, clean brushes, and set up/clean up on painting days depending on the time.
· Information Table: Pass out flyers & posters, give away items, and answer general questions about the project.

If you are interested in joining us as a volunteer, please use this sign up form link. We deeply value and appreciate the effort, care, and life volunteers bring to these projects! Let us know if you have any questions or concerns about the opportunity to support this incredible mural project.

Join us to write postcards for amazing Washington State Democratic candidates in 2022!

Over the past several years, Postcards4WA volunteers have written over 85,000 postcards to Washington voters in support of 40+ candidates.

We hope you’ll consider writing with us.

Why write for Washington candidates in 2022?

• Midterm elections historically see losses in seats held by the sitting president’s party.
• Avoid losing seats held by Democrats at both the federal and state levels of government
• Maintain Democratic majorities to prevent MAGA attacks on healthcare, education, election security and more

Join Fix Democracy First and Meaningful Movies Project for a special screening of Brave New Film’s Suppressed and Sabotaged: The Fight to Vote on Thursday, July 7th @ 6 pm PT. Robert Greenwald, the film’s producer and director will join us to introduce the film!

FILM DESCRIPTION:

Suppressed and Sabotaged: The Fight To Vote (2022), by Robert Greenwald, is a powerful documentary about the growing threat of voter suppression and election sabotage to our 2022 midterm elections. In 2021, 19 states passed 34 new voter laws following the Big Lie of the 2020 election.

The film focuses on this recent wave of voter suppression and subversion laws being enacted in states, and how the 2018 Georgia gubernatorial race between Stacey Abrams and Brian Kemp provides a blueprint for today’s voter suppression laws across the country.

Suppressed and Sabotaged: The Fight To Vote now includes perspectives from voters in Arizona, Florida, Texas, and Georgia that highlight how these new laws will affect their constitutional right to vote. Suppression tactics covered in the film include: Registration hurdles; Polling place closures; Voter purges; Missing absentee ballots; Extreme wait times at polling locations; Exact match disqualifications; New vote by mail limitations; Changes to ballot collection and drop off; and more.

Voter suppression laws disproportionately affect American Students, Senior Citizens, Black, Indigenous, Latino, and People of Color from casting their ballots. Suppressed and Sabotaged 2022 is a call to action against the calculated, unconstitutional and racist attacks intended to suppress the right to vote in America.

Special Guests: Andrea Miller from Center for Common Ground • Dave Daley from FairVote • Shenita Chism, Social Justice Director for the National Childrens Campaign
